Why did I start blogging?
I’ve been teaching sailing for a while now. It can be a really challenging activity at times. Imagine offering sailing courses to total beginners out in the middle of the temperamental Atlantic with 35Knots of wind and having people hanging onto the guardrail with their dear lives suffering with the worst seasickness ever. Or picture helping people with physical disabilities overcome their obstacles and teaching them how to sail in the middle of a deep lake. Yes, it’s true; sailing instructors face numerous situations where they are challenged both mentally and physically, but in spite of it all I still really love what I do.I have a genuine passion for sailing and teaching. Bringing these two passions together allows me to experiment with and develop my teaching aids, interactive games, and software simulation, all of which make it possible to showcase sailing as a fun and exhilarating adventure while still taking into consideration that we all learn in different ways and at different speeds.
I have taught people ranging from the age of 6-years of age right through to the age of 73 on a 75-foot boat. I look at challenges and find the beauty within them, as this is what often drives me to search for, develop, and offer the best possible training for each individual student despite their previous education, experience, and cultures.
I’ve been asked the same question over and over again from beginners through to pro skippers, so I thought that answering it in a blog would be the perfect way to share my thoughts and reach as many people as possible at the same time.
Too many people approach sailing with an academic approach, and this, in my opinion is wrong. Firstly, sailing must be understood by everyone and most of all SAFE. Having FUN while learning to sail follows closely behind in second place.
So the purpose of this blog is to make this sailing learning adventure accessible to a broader audience.
I am approaching you and this blog with the same humility and respect that I always give to the sea. I hope you are now ready to climb on board with me and enjoy the ride.
